Family engagement made easy

You know reading at home makes a huge difference. You also know how much work it takes to plan a family literacy event from scratch.

This kit does the planning for you. Each of the 10 stations comes with a station sign, a fold-up table tent with simple directions, and the recording sheets, cards or crafts it needs. Parents don’t need any teaching background. They read the directions on the table, sit down beside their child, and read, write and play together.

The night is fun, families leave with easy ways to support reading at home, and your school builds real connections with its families. In the words on the cover, you’ll be making memories through the joy of reading.

Every station includes

  • Station sign to hang on the wall or set in a frame
  • Fold-up table tent with step-by-step “How to Play” directions and a materials list
  • Recording sheets, cards or craft templates so parents and kids can work side by side

Each station has its own bright color, and its sign, tent, sheets and cards all match. Volunteers can set up quickly, and nothing ends up at the wrong table.

What families will do

  • Put picture cards in order and write their own first-next-then-last story
  • Sort sentence “keys” into punctuation pockets and record their answers
  • Build a parts-of-speech flipbook to take home
  • Match cause-and-effect puzzles to crack a secret message
  • Perform The Little Red Hen with character badges and picture cards
  • Play sight word bingo and win a book
  • Make a paper bag puppet (frog, cat, cow, dog, fox or pig) and put on a show
  • Follow a recipe to make their own trail mix
  • Create a superhero comic strip with speech bubbles
  • Fold a cootie catcher and answer questions about a book they read together

Plus everything you need to host

  • Planning timeline: what to do 3–4 weeks before, 1–2 weeks before, on the day, and after
  • Printing guide: which pages to print in color, which in black and white, and which on cardstock
  • Station materials checklist: every item each station needs, with set-up notes
  • Family invitations with a tear-off RSVP slip (2 per page)
  • Reading at Home handout: 6 easy ways families can build readers at home (2 per page)
  • Welcome sign and sign-in sheet
  • Family Reading Passport: families collect a stamp at each station they visit, which you can tie to a book prize drawing
  • Answer keys for Punctuation Pockets, Nouns, Verbs & Adjectives, and the Cause & Effect Code Match

Why schools love it

  • Low prep: print, cut and set out. No lesson planning required.
  • Easy for families: directions are written for parents, not teachers.
  • Families go home with something: puppets, flipbooks, comics and a snack.
  • Uses inexpensive supplies: paper lunch sacks, crayons, glue, scissors and a few snack ingredients.
  • Reusable: laminate the signs, tents and cards and use them again next year.
  • Flexible: works as a full school-wide event, a grade-level night, or a classroom family afternoon.
